How I escaped marrying a Boko Haram fighter

This story, told by Ladi Apagu to Chika Oduah from St. Theresa’s Catholic Church in Yola, has been edited for length. It is the second in a two-part series on women who escaped Boko Haram captivity. In the first part, three women, including Apugu, describe their imprisonment at and escapes from a house in Gulak. YOLA, Nigeria — Boko Haram entered Sabon Gari village about 7 p.m. We heard gunshots. The shots sounded like thunder, so the children were jumping and smiling and singing, “Let the rain come, let the rain come.” But I realized it was not thunder.
